40KW DC FAST CHARGER 3-Phase DC Fast-Charging Station
Everybody is Going Electric
Electric Vehicles are gaining popularity year on year, with many domestic and commercial manufacturers producing dedicated electric and hybrid models as part of their core range In line with the government’s pledge to ensure all vehicles on the UK’s roads are zero emissions by 2050.
The infrastructure is growing at the same pace with more accessibility to charge points across the UK.
What is DC Charging?
Electric vehicles charge their batteries with DC (Direct Current) but the national grid delivers AC (alternating current)
A DC fast charger bypasses the onboard charging device, supplying power directly and safely to a vehicle’s battery. The DC charger is external to the vehicle and therefore not constrained in size or cost.
DC EV fast chargers use 3-phase power, and have smart technology, enabling them to adjust the charge level to suit the battery state of charge (SOC). DC fast chargers have the ability to charge up to 50kw per hour depending on EV charge point capacity.
DC charging stations
DC EV fast charging requires a powerful source, as a DC charging station communicates with the electric car directly, rather than the onboard charger (which an AC charger would do) From here, the charging station will check the vehicle’s battery condition and adjust the output power depending on how much charge the vehicle needs.
The DC installation requires around 125A of power from the grid meaning that charging is much faster.
When using a DC charging station, DC power flows directly into the car’s battery via the rapid charging port of the car.
Why choose DC charging?
DC fast chargers bypass some of the size and power limitations found in an on-board charger. As the converter is in the charger itself, it provides DC power directly to the battery. This means the charging speed is much faster. Rapid charging is essential for undertaking long-distance journeys, or if you plan to cover a high number of miles. DC EV charging is the perfect option if you don’t have the time to wait 6-8 hours for a full AC charge.
DC chargers are generally bigger in size than AC chargers, in order to handle the additional power source. The additional power means that many DC chargers can charge your electric vehicle to 80% capacity in less than an hour.
