What is AC Charging?
AC is the abbreviation for alternating current, and the power that comes from the grid is always AC power.
The national grid delivers AC (Alternating Current) but Electric Vehicles must charge their batteries with DC (Direct Current).
An AC car charging point/EVSE supplies the car charger which then transfers the power to DC, allowing the battery to be charged. It’s important to look at the size of the onboard charging device and specification of your EV. The capacity of this will depend on how fast the on-board system can receive the AC current from the source.
If the onboard converter in your electric vehicle is small, the amount of power they are able to deliver to the battery is typically low. (6-22 kWh)
How does AC charging work?
